I don't think it's a "bug" in itself... You have to chose between over-the-air sync and USB (with iTunes) sync, for now it seems you can't have both at the same time.
It's true when you decide to use over-the-air syncing with a mobile.me account, so it's no surprise that it's true as well for a google calendar sync, too.
The trick is to use a third party software to keep iCal and AddressBook databases in sync with your google data, and this can be achieved with tools like Spanning Sync or BusySync, for instance, so it's not really a big deal.
Sure you have to pay for those additional apps, but people needing Google Calendar & Mac syncing (regardless of the iPhone part) had probably already gone for one of those solutions already, hadn't they?
